The color lithograph depicts a stylized telephone motif, characteristic of Konrad Klapheck's interest in everyday technical objects. At the center stands a highly simplified, almost sculptural device; the receiver appears detached from the base and seems to float above it, estranging the object's original function. Klapheck thus elevates a banal object into a mysteriously animated, monumental presence.Konrad Klapheck is one of the most important German artists of the second half of the twentieth century; his machine paintings are held, among others, in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou.
