An upright oak beam divided into two worlds: above, a block whose surfaces Hepp has painted in streaks of blue-grey – a sea of clouds that promises weather rather than open sky, split lengthwise by a drying crack. Below, the wood opens into a bright, almost untreated niche, and there stands a small figure in a pink shirt and olive trousers. The title states what the sculpture shows – and at the same time inverts our expectations: it is not the interior that is dark, but the sky above it. This double bottom is characteristic of Hepp; his figures seem lost in thought and unprotected, yet they hold their ground.

About the Artist Johannes Hepp

The sculptor Johannes Hepp (b. 1986 in Werneck near Würzburg) lives and works in Freiburg, where he studied at the Edith Maryon School of Art and now teaches there himself. At the heart of his work are small human figures that he releases from a single piece of soft wood, usually poplar or lime. Thin watercolour glazes and the visible traces of his tools keep the wood present. In 2018 Hepp received the Cultural Advancement Prize of the City of Würzburg.
