Even the title “Mehr Fleiß, Mehr Schwestern" (More Diligence, More Sisters) sounds like a slogan, oscillating between seriousness and irony. In a large-scale format, Anne Speier combines figurative groups with graphic and printed elements to create a scene that addresses questions of community, labor, and belonging.The work refers to the painting Die Schwestern Fleiß, an earlier piece by the artist. Using an app, she aged the faces from the original work and integrated them as screen prints into the outer figures of the group, which are dressed in down coats. The younger, new sisters at the center of the composition wear practical smocks and appear perhaps somewhat more industrious than their now aged predecessors.In this work, the artist critically engages with social structures and their generational dynamics.
