The oil painting "Disciple 2" shows, against an intense magenta ground, two robed figures in an icon-like arrangement: on the left an older, bearded teacher in a grey robe; on the right, seated lower, a younger disciple writing in a book on his lap. Composition and drapery recall Byzantine evangelist images, while the abraded, mottled paint surface evokes the impression of an old fresco fragment. Matthias Weischer thus combines art-historical pictorial tradition with painterly materiality. Matthias Weischer became known as a representative of the "New Leipzig School," above all with unpeopled interiors; here he turns to the figurative pictorial tradition.
