About the Artist Albrecht Gehse

Albrecht Gehse (*Borsdorf near Leipzig) is one of the most important figures in Leipzig painting. He studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Graphic Arts and Book Design in Leipzig from 1976 to 1981, under the tutelage of Bernhard Heisig, whom he assisted from 1987 to 1990.

Portraits occupy a central place in his work alongside landscapes and still lifes. In 2003, he created the official portrait of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl for the Chancellery Gallery of the Federal Chancellery; in 2026, he painted the portrait of the Lower Saxony Minister-President Stephan Weil for the State Chancellery in Hanover.

Works by Albrecht Gehse are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Federal Chancellery, the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, and various other German art collections and institutions.
